This is a town holiday festival that involves several local businesses and community activities. Amateur radio support is once again being called on to provide logistics and tracking for the trolley buses that transport patrons to and from several of the activity locations within the town. Amateur radio volunteers will need an 440 MHz HT or mobile rig that has DCS/DPL capabilities and enough battery power to last the entire event. An antenna that is external to the trolley is highly recommended, but please note that the trolleys are made primarily of fiberglass, so magnet mount antennas will not work as designed. Duct tape or clamps are usually used to complete the setup. Also, it is suggested to dress in layers as they may be placed in a variety of temperatures throughout the day. Usually a bag lunch and drink is provided, or operators may find something to purchase to eat or drink at a stop, as well as potentially do some holiday shopping.

This is one of the more fun, low key public service events in the Central MA region. It is highly recommended for any amateur radio operator, even those with no prior public service or emergency communications experience.

\"The 2012 Groton Road Race is fast approaching; this race this year is scheduled for Sunday April 29 -- five weeks from today.

The Squannacook River Runners and the Groton Police Department rely on the support of Amateur Radio operators to help keep this event safe for everyone. This is one of our premier activities for gaining community visibility. Despite the visibility this is a fairly easy event for us; we get to watch a thousand or more runners do their thing. Many will take the time to shout words of thanks to us as they pass.

It takes 30 to 40 radio operators to shadow the event officials and fill all the stations around the 10k course in the afternoon. The 5k course in the morning overlaps with the parking stations so we don\'t get away with very many fewer in the morning.

This is a town holiday festival that involves several local businesses and community activities. Amateur radio support is once again being called on to provide logistics and tracking for the trolley buses that transport patrons to and from several of the activity locations within the town. More information on the event can be viewed on the town's website.

Amateur radio volunteers will need an 440 MHz HT or mobile rig that has DCS/DPL capabilities and enough battery power to last the entire event. An antenna that is external to the trolley is highly recommended, but please note that the trolleys are made primarily of fiberglass, so magnet mount antennas will not work as designed. Duct tape or clamps are usually used to complete the setup. Also, it is suggested to dress in layers as they may be placed in a variety of temperatures throughout the day. Usually a bag lunch and drink is provided, or operators may find something to purchase to eat or drink at a stop, as well as potentially some holiday shopping.

This is one of the more fun, low key public service events in the Central MA region. It is highly recommended for any amateur radio operator but especially those with no prior public service experience.

Dirk will then lead up the activity and take us step by step through the construction, with everyone following along and building their own J-pole as we go.

A roll-up J-pole antenna is an excellant EmComm go-kit antenna. Since this J-pole is constructed primarily of 300 Ohm twinlead, it's very lightweight, easy to store and carry, easy to deploy, and gives significantly more gain than your standard HT antenna.

We need a count on the number of J-poles that we will be building. If you would like to build a J-pole in this workshop, please sign up for it using this form.

The course starts in Devens and proceeds through Ayer, Harvard, Bolton, Lancaster, Clinton, Boylston, West Boylston, Sterling, Shirley, Groton, Townsend, Pepperell, Hollis NH, and Amherst NH finishing back in Devens. Three shorter versions of the full course offer 62, 30, 20, and 11 mile rides.

In its 15th year, 2011 Memory Ride for Alzheimer's Research will be held on Saturday, July 23rd. This is the fourth year this event is held in our communities in Central and North Central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Over 327 bicycle riders are already registered for the event, suggesting a substantial increase in the number of participants this year over 2010.

This is also the fourth year that Amateur Radio operators have been asked to provide health and safety and logistical communications for the event. With such a large area being covered, there is a substantial need for communications between the six pit stops, the medical chase vehicles, the SAG vehicles, and the event director. The Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter is very appreciative of our service and impressed with the professionalism demonstrated by the radio operators the past three years.

If you are available on Saturday July 23 to volunteer please contact me. Some positions are a few hours or half-day while many (most) require an all-day (7am to 5pm) commitment. A mobile radio is also required, though I may be able to provide a limited number on loan.

Volunteers will need a 2M HT and battery power to last through the event. Lunches and drinks should be provided to volunteers, but it may be wise to bring these just in case. Some assignments may allow for volunteers to be near their vehicles, but not inside them. All volunteers should also be dressed appropriately for the weather that day.

This is a summary Ralph recently wrote in the Nashoba Valley ARC's newsletter:

If you're tired of this winter and looking forward to spring activities, allow me to turn your thoughts to the Groton Road Race. This race is one of the high-visibility events for Amateur Radio support. We typically field a crew of 35 to 40 radio operators to support this event.

This year the race is being held two weeks earlier than previous years -- the event organizers must be optimistic about a change of weather. I sure hope they've called this one correctly! Spring will be here by Sunday April 10 (think positively, think positively, think ...).

As you know from previous years our radio communications is held by the Groton Police Department to be a vital component of this event. Amateur Radio support of the Groton Road Race is one of the best public relations activities we can do for Amateur Radio locally.

I am again looking for 40 volunteers. Please let me know if you're available this year to help on April 10. If you have a preference for assignment, please let me know that as well.

The greatest number of operators are needed on station at 12:30 for the 10k race. If you are available to be on station at 11:30 for the 5k or 9:15 for race official shadows, parking, and other logistics, please let me know that too.

This is a town holiday festival that involves several local businesses and community activities. Amateur radio support is once again being called on to provide logistics and tracking for the trolley buses that transport patrons to and from several of the activity locations within the town.

Amateur radio volunteers will need an 440 MHz HT or mobile rig that has DCS/DPL capabilities and enough battery power to last the entire event. ]]> Saturday December 4 from 9 AM to 5 PM. This is a town holiday festival that involves several local businesses and community activities. Amateur radio support is once again being called on to provide logistics and tracking for the trolley buses that transport patrons to and from several of the activity locations within the town.

We need as many people as possible to check into the net and provide signal reports to and from the radio room in Worcester in order to test out the viability of these frequencies for our on-going use. Full instructions will be given during the net itself, but participants should be prepared to operate on each of the frequencies listed above and possibly others.

The background to this is that the board has decided that it is best to have 4 frequencies for our team's local use - one simplex and one repeater on each of the 2M and 440 bands. This covers all the bases and scenarios, and allows us to use the right tool for the right job given each situation. The previous 2M simplex frequency that we used (147.525) is now occupied by an EchoLink node in Springfield, which would provide a lot of interference to our operations if we tried to go back there. We receive this node at S7 at the radio room. So, this basically forces us to find a new simplex frequency along with the other 3 that we need to fill out the comm plan.

Additionally, since it will also be the first Monday of October, the state RACES nets will run. In our area, it is on the 146.970 Paxton repeater at 7:15 PM. Please consider checking into it as well.

NOTICE ABOUT PRIVACY CONCERNS - FCC REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS


Some amateurs have been concerned over the FCC's requirement for your Social Security Number (SSN). The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996, Public Law 104-134, requires all federal agencies to collect Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) from all persons doing business with the agency. This includes all applicants and holders of FCC licenses. For an individual, your TIN is your SSN.

It is suggested that all applicants register in the FCC's Universal Licensing System to obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN) prior to attending a VE session. When you register for an FRN, your SSN will not be disclosed to the public and it must be given only once. You may then use your FRN in place of your SSN on all future applications, including the Form 605 you will complete at the VE session. The Commission has taken several steps to ensure the privacy of your SSN. Electronic registration on the Internet is accomplished using the FCC's secure Web server.

To register for an FRN, go to http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls and click on REGISTER. Once you obtain your FRN, write it down and bring it with you to the VE session. Be sure to keep a record of your FRN and password for future use. If you do not register before the VE session, you will be required to provide your SSN on Form 605 at the VE session in order for your application to be processed.]]>

We will try to provide a talk-in on the 145.310 / 449.025 W1WPI repeater. It is recommended that if you are not familiar with the WPI campus that you print out and bring with you the campus map.

Please bring:
  • AN ORIGINAL AND A PHOTOCOPY of your current license and any CSCEs or other paperwork you are submitting
  • A basic calculator
  • Two forms of state acceptable ID (one must be a picture ID)
  • $15 exam fee (if check, payable to "ARRL VEC")
  • Pen or pencil

The photocopies of your paperwork are very important as we must submit a copy of your records to the ARRL VEC if you are successful.

Times involved with each of the assignments will vary as well. Volunteers will receive tickets for a professionally catered BBQ lunch, as well as a technical fabric t-shirts, instead of cotton. On Field Day the Worcester Emergency Communications Team will work as many stations as possible on the 80, 40 and 20 meter amateur bands (with a Get on the Air station on 10m) and we will learn and practice operating in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. If enough people sign up in the next 10 days we will add 15 meters and even 10 meters stations!

It's a known fact that QSO's don't happen on RF alone and this year the canteen promises to be the best ever! We've added an 'All-You-Can-Eat' meal plan – 3 meals for just $20. The BBQ feeds the QSO frenzy on Saturday evening with a new "all-you-can-eat" menu for just $12.00. Breakfast refuels the QSO troopers with a $6 breakfast and we've added a Sunday lunch for $6. The more signups we get the better the vittles.

Attend an educational session on Weather Prediction presented by Stephen, KB1SCD on Sunday at 9:00 AM.

Practice satellite communications during field day – don't miss this fun event!

Boy Scout Troop 101 will be helping us this year at the GotA station.

Members are no longer required to login for any purpose. Members can also change their email address on the team's email reflector using the form in the "Members" drop down.

One thing that we are looking for are more radio pictures for the top header here. If anyone wants their radio features, send the pictures to Gil WK1H. The pictures should have 1000 pixels width and 285 pixels height.

The specific courses are IS-100.b and IS-700.a. The IS-100.a is basic Incident Command Structure. This is the management system that is to be used to manage any large scale incidents. IS-700.a is a NIMS Introduction. NIMS (National Incident Management System) is the federal implementation of the ICS system. Additionally, if you are likely to assume a supervisory role during an incident, IS-200.b (ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents) is required. Since any Net Control assignment is considered a supervisory role, it is highly recommended that all team members take this course as well because any member may be asked to take a NCS assignment at any time during an incident. IS-100.b is a prerequisite to taking IS-200.b. All three courses are free and only involve a few hours of your time. If classroom courses are preferred over online courses, email Worcester Emergency Management with your request. If enough people are interested (10+), we will be able to run a normal classroom session for any of these courses, again, free of charge. For more on this subject, see the Recommended Training page.
